Files are important tools in the reed making/finishing process. I use the needle file set, especially the half-rounded file, in the first step of finishing reed blanks to reduce the thickness on the rails.  I also use this file to thin the back third of the reed to improve the response of the lowest register of the bassoon, especially low B.  When working over a fairly large area the file reduces the thickness of the cane without the problem of knife marks/gouges.  I always work the cane and the file wet. A set of different shaped files is handy to have for different purposes and, since most have a sharp cutting edge, they are handy to have for several students in a class.

The jumbo needle files may be used to mark wire placement notches on the cane.  They are also useful to take off cane more rapidly than the small needle files in case a student brings a thick, unfinished reed they bought to class.

The diamond file set can be used to smooth a reed that has an extremely rough surface, particularly with knife marks.  The flat diamond file is the best tool I have found for narrowing or straightening the blades.  It is much more rigid than a permanent nail file.

The large round diamond file with the wooden handle is an excellent tool for cleaning the inside of a recently reamed reed.  The 400 grit surface easily cleans the inside of the reed.  Care must be used if you insert the file all the way into the reed as it will also sand the throat of the reed.  This may be desirable though, if your student made their throat too small, or if you have just used a throat reamer.
